The heavy rainfall , though a boon for plant growth, also brought with it another pest \u2013 hordes of\u00a0 slugs.\u00a0 These lethal interlopers \u00a0which appeared out of nowhere, were unhindered by the fruit cage and within weeks had destroyed around half of the prized strawberry crop.\u00a0 Another batch simply rotted away on the sodden earth.\u00a0 A hasty application of straw and jam jars around the few remaining berries salvaged a couple of pounds .\u00a0 Delicous; but barely enough to fill a few bowlfulls topped with cream.\u00a0 Let alone make jam.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_480\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yoga-4-all.co.uk\/wp_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/raspberries.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-480\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-480 \" title=\"raspberries\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yoga-4-all.co.uk\/wp_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/raspberries-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"raspberries\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yoga-4-all.co.uk\/wp_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/raspberries-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.yoga-4-all.co.uk\/wp_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/raspberries-399x300.jpg 399w, https:\/\/www.yoga-4-all.co.uk\/wp_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/raspberries-90x67.jpg 90w, https:\/\/www.yoga-4-all.co.uk\/wp_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/raspberries-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.yoga-4-all.co.uk\/wp_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/raspberries.jpg 909w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Raspberry canes in their second year<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A few weeks later the raspberries started to ripen.\u00a0 Last year the one year canes produced only a few flowers.\u00a0 By contrast, this year the flowers and forming fruit were abundant.\u00a0 Being higher off the ground, they were safe from slugs.\u00a0 Instead the netted cage was the target of blackbird attack.\u00a0 These ingenious and greedy creatures found the smallest weaknesses within the netting to break into the cage and make off with the booty.<\/p>\n<p>Daily, we watched perplexed as, each hole being mended, the blackbirds would miraculously re-appear inside the netting, quite undeterred by our presence\u00a0 as we scowled and stamped in rage outside the cage.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_482\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yoga-4-all.co.uk\/wp_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/redberries.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-482\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-482\" title=\"strawberries and raspberries\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yoga-4-all.co.uk\/wp_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/redberries-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"strawberries and raspberries\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yoga-4-all.co.uk\/wp_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/redberries-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.yoga-4-all.co.uk\/wp_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/redberries-402x300.jpg 402w, https:\/\/www.yoga-4-all.co.uk\/wp_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/redberries-90x67.jpg 90w, https:\/\/www.yoga-4-all.co.uk\/wp_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/redberries-150x111.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.yoga-4-all.co.uk\/wp_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/redberries.jpg 838w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-482\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Salvaged! Some strawberries to add to the feast of raspberries<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In a last desperate measure we covered each of the bushes with fleece and pegged it securely.\u00a0\u00a0 The result \u2013 success!\u00a0 The fleece acted like a greenhouse, not just protecting the berries from bird attack but ripening them quickly.<\/p>\n<p>So after a long battle (and really it did feel like that!) we have finally been able to enjoy the fruits of our labour.\u00a0 Pounds and pounds of sumptuous raspberries to adorn breakfast muesli, as an accompaniment to almond shortbread and in a velvety clafoutis.<\/p>\n<p>And the winning streak seems set to continue with both blackcurrants and redcurrants ripening well and the prospect of that most heavenly of summer dishes &#8211; summer pudding.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The heavy rain, though good for early sown crops like broad beans, spinach and salad leaves, has played havoc on other parts of the allotment including the soft fruit garden.
